This is IPL post. I finally got an updated dataset to work on. You can view and download the data by clicking here.
Introduction
Who is the best IPL team? Which team has the best home winning record? Who performs the best in away games? In this short post we are going to answer all those questions and some more.
Best IPL overall winning records
First let's look at which teams has the best winning percentage overall. The chart below shows the percentage wins in blue and the percentage wins due to toss in orange. The team with the highest winning percentage is Chennai Super Kings with 61.88%. No wonder they have won 3 IPL trophies. Second and third place belongs to Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad with win percentages of 56.83% and 54.29%. Although CSK have the best winning percentage, Mumbai Indians has won the most IPL trophies(4). This could imply that Mumbai Indians are better at winning the crucial games.
I also included the win percentage due to toss. This shows that CSK has 64.37% chance of winning if it wins the toss. The Kolkata Knight Riders are in second place winning 57.14% of their games if they win the toss. In third place are the Mumbai Indians with 55.79%.
Best IPL home and away winning records
The below chart shows the winning percentages for overall, home and away winning percentages. CSK has an impressive home record winning 70.79% of the time. Second and third place belongs to Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians with 65.15% and 61.90%.
There are only two teams that have an away winning percentage over 50% and they include the "big two" again. First, second and third are Mumbai(52.53%),CSK(50.70%) and Sunrisers Hyderabad(48.08%).
As we can see so far two names stand out. CSK and Mumbai Indians. Both have great numbers. Let's explore some more.
Best IPL overall winning records : Bat and bowl first
Now let's rate the team winning percentage on batting or bowling first. Only two teams have a winning rate over 50% batting first is CSK(58.62%) and Mumbai Indians(56.57%). Sunrisers Hyderabad is in third place winning 49.18% of games betting first.
The chart below shows that winning rates bowling first is higher that the winning rate batting first. This means that teams on average stand a better chance to win if they bowl first than if they bat first. On top once again is Channai winning 65.75% of their games bowling first. Second and third spot belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad(61.36%) and KKR(60.64).

One interesting thing to note on the chart is Mumbia Indians' bars. The winning rates for all three are almost identical. This implies that Mumbai Indians wins matches at the same rate irrespective whether they bat or bowl first.
Now let's go a little deeper. Let's break the above chart into two charts. A chart for home wins and a chart for away wins.
Home
Just like in the previous chart the team that bowls first often ends up winning more matches than the team that bats first. The only exceptions are CSK and Mumbai Indians. CSK's win rate for batting first at home is 74.51% while Mumbai has a winning rate of 62.22%.
Rajasthan Royals' record bowling first at home is just as impressive at CSK's record batting first at home: 75%!! Second and third belongs to Sunrisers Hyderabad(69.57%) and KKR(68.18). This the first time none of the "big two" are not in a top three list.

Away
Finally we look at the win rate for away games. Mumbai Indians(51.85) is the only team with a away win rate of over 50%. Second best is bets is Sunrisers Hyderabad with 45.15%.
CSK has the best win rate bowling first at 65.71%, follwed be KKR(54%) and Mumbai Indians(53.33%)
Conclusion
Their are two prominent teams in this post. They are almost in every top 3 list. Between them they have won 7 out of the 12 IPL trophies. You can make up your own mind which one of them is the best IPL team. I think an easier choice would be to say which team is number 3.
That's all for now. Let me know what you think. Hope you enjoyed it and I'll see you next time.
